The ancient ice is far along in melting,and the new ice DOES have surface area,but little thickness/volume.
The overall 'mass' of the ice is diminishing.The Arctic could be completely ice-free in the summer of 2020 or so.
Solar insolation is penetrating the thin ice,captured by the dark underlying water and heating the Arctic ocean,amplifying the warming.
