Should Tesla get into trouble, they could sell license to supercharger network access to other EV makers.
I think that supercharger network is actually their biggest advantage in the EV market. If Musk is ready to sell the electricity to every car that stops by, Tesla will become largest network of charging stations, strategically placed around the U.S.
