I'd give a dishonorable mention to the Cadillac 4-6-8, and various GM diesels that were built on gasoline blocks.
However, I have a blanket of scorn for all land vehicles that outweigh their average payload. For real efficiency, start with a velomobile, not a big steel box.
We have seen amazing improvements in automotive sophistication, but there's almost nothing available that weighs under a ton, or can be repaired at home. If there's no market in used parts because they all go to the crusher, I stay away.
