It's extremely difficult to solve an overweight problem with exercise alone. So few calories are burned through exercise. Much easier to not put the excess energy into the body in the first place.
If someone wants to lose weight or become leaner, it's going to be something like 90% diet, and 10% exercise.
That said, I can be relatively healthy on just about any type of food. I could eat nothing but McDonalds for every meal and with exercise, be in great physical shape. If I wanted to gain weight/muscle, I'd simply increase the portion sizes, and if I wanted to lean out, I'd reduce portion sizes.
People respond differently to foods though. Jordan Peterson says he's mostly solved physical and mental issues by maintaining a strict beef diet. That's probably a terrible diet for many (most?) people, but it works for him. My point is you've got to experiment to see what works well for you. His main takeaway point is that with so many foods that we consume, pinpointing what agrees and what does not agree with our body is difficult/impossible because there are too many variables. Instead cut out as many variables as possible, experimenting with a few foods and slowly add complexity/variety until you identify stuff that doesn't agree.
