In May,1995,monitors were picking up cosmic particles with energies in excess of 13 X 10 to the 9th power electron Volts,at the University of Chicago,Haleakala Crater,Maui,Hawaii,neutron sensor.
They figured that CMEs were accelerating these high-energy particles within propagating shockwaves which preceded the CME itself.
Other equipment was watching gamma ray bursts and their infrared after glow.
And muon/tau-type neutrinos were also being looked at.
