Originally Santa Claus had no ties with Christmas.
Santa Claus was based on the Dutch Sinterklaas (Saint Nicholas) who was a Christian replacement for the pagan tradition of Wodan and his helpers (black raven).
Anyway, Christmas is part of Western culture. Christian faith and culture are intertwined; our whole thought frame is modeled on Christian stories and traditions. Losing faith does not rip the ties of culture away.
