The most practical solution for that usage case is to own an EV and rent an ICE the few days you need to drive a couple hundred miles.
The reality is the most financially sound decision is likely to keep your Prius. I replaced a 2005 Prius with my 2016 Spark EV. The Prius averaged $0.05 per mile for gas. The Spark is $0.03 per mile for electricity (if I didn't charge at work for free) Using my numbers switching from the Prius to an EV will save you $220 a year. The EV + pusher trailer will never make financial sense.
The other option is to buy the EV and keep your Prius for longer trips. I only got $3500 for my Prius and it was in perfect running condition with 150K miles.
