The most practical solution for that usage case is to own an EV and rent an ICE the few days you need to drive a couple hundred miles.

The reality is the most financially sound decision is likely to keep your Prius. I replaced a 2005 Prius with my 2016 Spark EV. The Prius averaged $0.05 per mile for gas. The Spark is $0.03 per mile for electricity (if I didn't charge at work for free) Using my numbers switching from the Prius to an EV will save you $220 a year. The EV + pusher trailer will never make financial sense.

The other option is to buy the EV and keep your Prius for longer trips. I only got $3500 for my Prius and it was in perfect running condition with 150K miles.

I consider prior planning and negotiating with others as aspects of independence.

Not involving other people is not independence, it's hermit-ism.

Dependance is obligating a burden on others.

Call it what you will, I don't like relying on others to get me around.

Tell that to the guy selling tires next time you're there, or to the fuel delivery driver as you fill the tank; the people that paved the roads...

Yes, yes, "No man is an island", but it shouldn't "Take a village" for me to take a highway trip at my leisure.

Needs, wants, fantasies and reality.

How much does it cost to keep the Prius? Insurance? Tags? Maintenance?
Pros: Go whenever you need in your own car. Cons: Another car to maintain and insure. (PS. When I went to one car from two my insurance actually went up.)

How much would it cost you to rent? How would that compare to the cost of the Prius? How much would you get from selling your Prius? How many days of car rentals could you afford with that? Cons: can't drive it across the boarder.

Pusher trailer: How much do you really want to spend the next several weeks/months sawing a car in half? If you really want it, go for it!

Do you live where it's sunny? I once figured it was possible to attach about 6kW of slide out solar panels to the roof of my Leaf for a bit more than $2,000. Pros: light weight, can charge anywhere there's sun, shades car in any parking lot to help keep battery cool and charging is free!

The idea was to make it all in a large curved panel held up about 2 feet above the roof car that extends from front bumper to end of boat tail with the ability to tilt from side to side in order to get the most charging when parked.

Are you asking me?

I was talking about this:

From the first page of this post. And I meant it in the sense of keeping the Prius along with a Leaf and therefore having two cars. Having two cars means maintenance and taxes on two cars. But in some cases, as I have found out, it can be cheaper to insure two cars instead of just one.
