I know very well about the old Borg Warner 3 speed with Overdrive, and the free wheeling feature.

You can read up on them here:

Before the new 6/8/and now 10 gear automatics I was planing on putting one between a auto and the rear end, as they are two transmissions in one, the three speed and the OD. I had one on a 1956 Studebaker that I rigged to shift into OD on any gear, so I had a 6 speed.

I would use 3rd and 2nd as a low and high range selector and use the OD with any forward gear, so I would have all kinds of gears.

It was complex and tricky but it could have worked.

But a all in one auto seems a much easier idea.
