Before overdrive transmissions were common, low final drives were used to help fuel economy. I had a V8 Chevrolet Monza with a 3 speed automatic and a 2.29 final drive. Shouldn't be too hard to find other applications like that to pull some parts from, if that's what one was up to.

Their web site sucks. Maybe I am wrong.
And sadly they seem to too. Called them got their tech support guys, was told there was never s lower gear than 308, I said really I already have a 2.75 for a 8.8.

Then after some more checking with other guys came back asking do I have a 28 or 31 splines axles, I say why?? They said the gears only fit one or the other.

And again other say other wise, a 8.8 gear set is a 8.8 gear set, the splines only matter with the carrier.

Oh well experts...old saying experts = ex=past tense pert= a drip under pressure. Seems true in this case.

That can be a very helpful tip, now to figure out when ODs became common...

Thanks.

I had a 54 Plymouth with an overdrive handle, but using that handle just let the car freewheel when coasting. No engine drag when off the accelerator. Don't know how it did that.

I know very well about the old Borg Warner 3 speed with Overdrive, and the free wheeling feature.

You can read up on them here:

https://www.fordification.com/tech/overdrive.htm

Before the new 6/8/and now 10 gear automatics I was planing on putting one between a auto and the rear end, as they are two transmissions in one, the three speed and the OD. I had one on a 1956 Studebaker that I rigged to shift into OD on any gear, so I had a 6 speed.

I would use 3rd and 2nd as a low and high range selector and use the OD with any forward gear, so I would have all kinds of gears.

It was complex and tricky but it could have worked.

But a all in one auto seems a much easier idea.

The sad thing (or) good thing is I have two of these old 3speed OD trannies.

Now IF only I could find parts or instructions on how to divorce the OD from the main housing and in so doing create a stand alone Over Drive that could them be mounted mid ships as a browny transmission. Say I would then have a 8 speed drive train, or a 5 speed with a double over drive.

Its gotten to the point for me if its not in a junkyard axle ready to go its probably not worth it. lol
Sad, but even with you spend 600$ getting gears installed they are very finicky and buzzy.

I fear as much. I am planing on doing my own rear end rebuilding, I will take the time to make sure the gears are running true.

This is the one I like most. It conveniently has a lot of Honda ratios built in:

Each gear mesh adds drag. I don't know how much.
