Automation is not elimination of freedom; it's an expansion.
We have clothes washers to wash clothes. You're free to wash 'em by hand if you choose, but why not let the machine do it so your time is free to do other things?
Most of us will want to waste as much time in the "Matrix" as possible anyhow. We're already doing that with Facebook and Twitter. Plenty of movies come to mind that foreshadow the future, but Surrogates particularly comes to mind.
