I don't think those BATs are in chronological order. In any event, they were not making fins for the usual reasons, or they would not have become curled.
The windmobile is another way to use fins for something other than stability, and I think it has considerable potential as a way to reduce average drag in the real world, even if pure wind power is seldom close to adequate. I saw the John Paul Mitchell Systems wind & pedal hybrid get hit by a gust, and the acceleration was startling.
