I just watched the scene and thought the use of homo was a funny. It's appropriate for the time period too.
The thing about jokes is, nobody is required to find them funny, and you don't have to listen to them.

It's more of how it reflects the mindset.
Can you make gay jokes? Sure. Gay people do it all the time.
But when a joke reflects the bias that it's *bad* to be gay, used in a context that, rather than reflecting a character defect of the speaker, reinforces the fact that it's a commonly accepted term of derision, it's a bit jarring for a younger audience that doesn't have the same views regarding gender.

Sort of like black-face jokes or "Jap" bashing in old movies and cartoons (the latter makes it difficult for me to watch some World War II shows, as my grandmother spent the war in a US Concentration Camp).
I won't argue that the 'homo' joke is not era-appropriate, but it's one of those things you have to explain to the kids. Because they definitely sat up and took notice of it.
