Seriously, if driving has no perceived risk to the driver, the landscape takes a beating. Any "safe zone" tends to create a surrounding danger zone, while depriving the inhabitants of their natural zest for life.
In '57, Ford buried a safety car they'd built, because nobody wanted to talk safety. Now, we are being sold racing-car grade stuff just because we can be scared into paying big bucks to buy it and haul it around.
I don't mind designing so that most of the structure is useful and safe in a crash, but I'd opt for nimble instead of crush proof, and trying to match momentum with a truck is obviously a non-starter.
In the middle ages, books had brass corners on the covers to prevent wear. More important books got fancier corners, until they were like jewelled feet, keeping the book from touching a table with the rest of the binding. Very safe, yes? Except that every less valuable book in a collection was getting gouged by every more valuable book, until librarians banned metal completely.
