The flexibility of a plug-in hybrid is hard to beat, plus we could mention some newer technologies on their way to get widespread on ICEs in order to get them further.

Electrics have been proven suitable for short-distance routes, but the recharging time and lack of supporting infrastructure renders them unsuitable for a one-size-fits-all approach.
