All-electric is stupid for the expense. Public and private. Hybrid was and is the ONLY smart approach. Dollars and destruction and unreliability kill all-electric.
Single “fuel” makes no sense ( in a manner of speaking). Not when grid access or cold weather or WHATEVER makes charging a problem.
A big cruising sailboat without an auxiliary diesel? No thanks. Hire more crew is “the solution”. Life is such that small craft warning signs are also a caution in tight circumstances, not a prohibition.
A get it home, get it to the shop, fix it when I can afford it, little liquid fuel motor is what makes sense.
Those who believe or justify all-electric are Enemy to man, not friend. For that way is about control of others, not problem-solving.

Electric Terry Hershner did the world's first and only electric motorcycle Iron Butt 1,000 miles in 24 hours on a Vetter streamlined Zero motorcycle with extra batteries and chargers. He could suck 4, 7kW level 2 chargers dry at a time with long, home built extension cables. But was mostly only able to find 2 at a time. Had a moving AVERAGE speed of 73 mph. And energy efficiency of 270 mpge. He gets 295 mpge when not in such a rush due to the excellent cdA.

I did mine on my modified Honda CBR250R. 1006 mile in 23 hours. But couldn't quite crack 100 mpg since the weather was cold and rainy.

Our new car is a plug in hybrid.

The flexibility of a plug-in hybrid is hard to beat, plus we could mention some newer technologies on their way to get widespread on ICEs in order to get them further.

Electrics have been proven suitable for short-distance routes, but the recharging time and lack of supporting infrastructure renders them unsuitable for a one-size-fits-all approach.

This is an interesting article about how the switch to electric vehicles will effect the Germany auto industry.

Heh, heh. He said "Dingolfing'.
They do give a nod to Porsche winning a race in 1899 in his electric.
Meanwhile Jay Leno is retrofitting his Baker electric with Lithium-ion batteries and piezoelectric heaters. This video is 5 years old.

One million miles
Musk said the current battery packs have a longevity of 300,000 to 500,000 miles, which would be sufficient for most cars. However, the drivetrain lasts a million miles, so chances are if you do drive a lot the pack would be first to go.
For now.
Tesla has filed a patent for a different battery and electrolyte chemistry which it expects makes the packs last for a million miles...!

Coming next year. That should speed up de-ICEing.

I thought the supercharger idea was cool until I saw they charge $0.28/kwh. Only three times more expensive than electricity in my area, but better than nothing. I still really don't see EV's taking over as the grid would need to be huge, and then the energy would just come indirectly from "clean coal."
I did the calculations and my 22k miles/yr would consume the same amount of electricity as my house.

Ha, that's 4 times more than my base rate.
If you want fast. You have to pay for it.
