As a hobby thing, it could work. If your hobby is breaking computers. It wouldn't work as a transportation thing, either, but as a "look at how good I am, I can do this" way. And if you're that good at it, you probably already own a Tesla or two and never gave a thought to buying the crippled version.

The only way any of this could pay off financially is if you were to sell your software (and any hardware required), but you'd be targeting a nonexistent market of people who bought Teslas, but didn't want to pay for the good versions, and are willing to pay you big bucks for a software download that would void every scrap of warranty and render the car nearly unsellable. Or in the "look at me" sense and it gets you a job.
