As for the zigzag tape, after reading the article on the glider and seeing the enhanced photographs I do believe they work. Their benefit is likely too small to be lost in the every day driving and I suspect that you do not have acces to a wind tunnel and enhanced photography.
Instead of a tuft test try a thread test and use shorter threads?
