The aerodynamicist in the video implicate the purpose of moving the mirror to the door is to limit the interaction between the vortex coming off of the mirror and the side window. You'd have to think there are drag (reduction) implications there too?
Subaru was able to kill this effect by moving their mirrors out to 80mm from the side glass.Tesla's are using this, along with the now defunct,2nd-gen Volt, and Jaguar and Aston Martin.
The 1998 Porsche GT1 has the lowest drag mirrors you're likely to see.
