It needs to be tensioned within specs. If it's making noise, you need to fix that problem, which might mean cleaning the belt, putting belt dressing on it, or replacing some accessory that is placing an unnecessary (bad bearing, failing alternator, etc) load on the engine.

If it's a chirp chirp noise, then I suspect a spot of oil on the belt.
