I believe the Mitsubishi I-MiEV and Honda Fit EV use lithium titanate for their battery. It's been around for quite some time. I believe energy density is lower, but the cycles it can handle are crazy high. Cell voltage is 2.3V nominal so you need ~30% more cells for the same voltage with lithium ion.
