Zoos don't generally try to actively kill animals. Usually the just provide the environments necessary for them to live while entertaining us monkeys.

Extinction occurs all the time (99.99 of all species are extinct), and the imperative to save them is only in relation to how much we value their existence. People seem to like 'em well enough, which is why zoos are appropriate places for them to live.

I think wooly mammoths would be neat to have around, and the last ones lived just 3200 years ago, but am I really that worse off now that they are extinct? Probably not.
