China has a population density of 145 people per km^2. US has a density of 34 people per km^2. Japan peaked in 2009 at 340 people per km^2 and has declined to 334. Monaco has 19,621 per km^2. Maybe their country of 40,000 people are the worst. Australia has 3 people per km^2.
Does it count against a country if their population is growing, but mostly due to immigration? The US by far has more immigrants than any other nation, taking about 1M per year. We'd be about steady state if there were no immigration (not making an argument for eliminating immigration).
Anyhow, Japan is the trend setter now, and they are a sign of things to come with a declining population.
