Its meant to reduce the size of the engine to reduce the fuel consumption at steady state. aka out of boost.
But they put the turbo on it to give it the v6 power for acceleration.
When you take the sum of improvement its a net improvement for fuel consumption, but under load acceleration with boost suffers an efficiency loss.
The subaru wrx speaks for itself. 300hp 4 cylinder that gets worse gas mileage than all of the 6 speed manual v8 mustangs and camaros and corvettes etc...
