Even without that, an app store is not necessary. Android has a file system much like Linux and one can transfer and execute apps independent of the walled gardens.

Have you tried recently to opensource the current OS's? Had my android 9 phone for a month so far and I am just now able to not have google intercept all the time. All the root stuff is blocked from downloading, my XP and win10 machines won't recognize the phone at all.
