I bet a bandana is 90% as effective. The point isn't to filter viruses, it's to keep you from touching your face or otherwise spewing droplets.
I also suspect throwing a used mask into a dryer for 5 minutes kills 99.9% of the viruses.
My work just sent an email asking where I want a UV disinfecting light to be shipped. Sounds like something fun to play with.
15 years ago I had an idea for a baseball cap that had a UV curtain that cast down from the brim. Of course, tilting your head down would then aim that curtain at your body, so if it was effective, it wouldn't be safe. Maybe it would be safe enough so long as you wore a long sleeved shirt.
