I don't even know why the fossil fuel industry would benefit from advertising, but then again I wonder the same thing when I see drug commercials and yet they still exist. If someone needs to utilize fossil fuels, they will. Nobody is sitting around wondering how they are going to find energy for their lawnmower. In a similar vein, I don't know why I'd need to tell my doctor that they need to prescribe asthma medication, for example.

Anyhow, branding for commodities is stupid. Petrol is petrol, and there's no reason to advertise it. Apparently it's not stupid, because people still prefer their bleach say Clorox on it, rather than NaClO
