Medical accidents are the 3rd leading cause of death. Why do we allow a medical oligopolies to be gatekeepers of our own health? Would we really be at risk of bumping the 3rd leading cause of death up a notch or 2 if we could make our own decisions?

My wife's mom was just given a substitute medication from a pharmacist because the one she was prescribed was out. Before taking it, she ran it by my wife who said it was way too potent to safely switch to.

I'm not saying doctors aren't brilliant, but even genius is prone to many errors. What would be the danger in people taking a more active interest in their own health?
