Name a bigger brand of disinfectant than Lysol. Xerox, Kleenex and Photoshop are familiar with their brands being conflated with the category they're in.
Manufactured consent, false choices, call it what you will, it's spot on. We're all cogs in their machine, trying to get free. I even hate the things I'm a fan of, because I understand how contrived the things I've been taught to like are. Kind of like I fight with you because you're generally right on, but in a way that I find off base, most likely because you're off base in a slightly different way than I am. The only answer for which is internet hatred. Sorry, Darin, but there's nothing we can do.
I've never been a fan of McLuhan, though, because I was introduced to him by a high school teacher who did little more than repeat "the medium is the message" over and over. I was already tired enough of people repeating catchphrases that even just hearing McLuhan's name turns me away.
