Normally lithium is used to make hydrogen for nuclear fusion. It doesn't leave any radio active byproducts.
The US has plenty of heavy water so we got enough deuterium to last a while if we had nuclear fusion.
But a better use of heavy water is breading fissile fuel from depleted uranium or thorium or just using natural uranium, depleted uranium or thorium as reactor fuel.
