So I pulled the valve cover off the fiat about a week ago. What I saw was concerning and I realized I never checked the engine in the civic.
For comparison, my 73 Fiat 124 sedan:
And the civic:
Looks good. Then I noticed on the front of the engine by the oil dipstick:
One of the valve lash adjusters. You can see the missing spot on the right side 4th valve away from the front. The screw piece looks fine. The nut is slightly smashed, but relatively unharmed. I figured I'd go ahead and pull the upper timing cover for a look since you have to take the valve cover off first anyway. One of the bolts was loose and the cover ear partially broken. The other is stuck. When I go to loosen it the socket (six point) starts to cam out (like a stripped screw) and won't keep a grip. I tried vice grips, but its pretty cramped and I can't get any except the smallest to fit and still had no luck. A friend has a set of rounded head sockets I am going to try and worst case is I either weld a wrench to the bolt head to break it loose or I try to cut the head off to salvage the cover and attempt to remove the exposed stud. Any other ideas?
Also if anyone wants to help me look for a replacement timing cover this is the only part number I could find for it. TIA.
