^ An uncle of mine had manual Volvos in that era, and I remember the overdrive switch on top of the shifter as well. I think he would press the clutch, then press the switch. Seems strange, doesn't it? I don't remember if he had to press it again to get out of OD.

Coincidentally, he also had a late 70's BMW 3 series, and was one of the first people to show me how to drive stick in that car (on my grandpa's 1/4 mile gravel farm laneway). I was suitably impressed. I don't know if he was!
