People love storage, but companies love selling. So they generate hype with a few magazine ads and some gushing blog posts for a product that's less functional but is more visually striking. Because it's visually so different, everyone can see at a glance that yours is cheap and old fashioned- so now people want to replace their microwaves just to refresh their kitchens.
Everyone wins- the hood people, the microwave people, the retail and installation people, the "look at how fabulous my kitchen is" people... everyone except regular people. And in 10 years, microwave hoods will be a thing again.
