It depends on where the kitchen is and how it is designed. Cabinets above a bar or counter between the kitchen and living area block's the view and communication.
Today's trend is an open floorplan with the kitchen open to the dining and living area. That allows everyone to talk while meal prep is done and allows for a lot of natural light to flow through living space.
A 50's era kitchen was usually walled off from the living area. The men-folk could chat unbothered by the sounds of meal prep and then the meal would magically appear. After dinner the women and dishes would disappear and magically get washed and put away.
Today everyone is expected to be involved in those activities so it kitchen design allows for communication while it takes place.
