That's true, but it doesn't explain why there is a design fad to make the grill appear larger than it actually is.

aerohead's explanation seemed to make sense to me; that there's little aero penalty to styling the front of the vehicle, so that's the area designers get more freedom to differentiate the brand.

Unfortunately the current fad seems to differentiate the brand through ever expanding faux grills.
