I figured out what the Halloween haunting was. It's the door ajar buzzer. A most un-Beetle like thing, I assure you.
Why did it turn off when I pulled the hood release? There are some things which if men knew, would drive them mad.
I was steam cleaning the door jamb and I found the switch in the lower corner, with a torn rubber boot.
I also need two plastic clips for the door threshold plate. Where do I go for those? I can get VW parts delivered to the lane in front of my home.
