The main advantage to hub motors is elimination of the differential and drag that goes with it. They are amazingly efficient in that respect over any gearset.

I think they are overselling the range and charge reality, but through reddit conversations am at least convinced that it can still be a significant leap forward in efficiency - IF they ever actually deliver one.
