Note that the Hilux was discontinued in the US in 1995, replaced by the Tacoma that year. It continues in the rest of the world, but the fifth generation was the last you could get here. The Tacoma went 1995-2004, 2005-2015, and is now in its third generation 2016- .
I've been reading about these trucks the past couple days since I'll be flying out to Washington this summer to rehab my grandfather's 1991 Hilux and drive it back to Illinois. Then, I plan to use throttle-stop testing to measure drag changes from an airdam at various heights, tailgate spoiler, bed cover, rear wheel air dams, etc. It's a 4WD 22R-E 5-speed, originally rated 17/20. I think the highest-mpg Hilux sold here was 22 mpg highway (5-speed RWD).
