In January of 1949, Heinz Nordoff was appointed Managing Director of Volkswagen. One of his first directives was to have Cabriolet versions of the Volkswagen Beetle constructed for production consideration. Hebmüller was assigned the task of building a two-seater “Roadster” version: Karmann was instructed to build a true four passenger Cabriolet.
