In my country, the obsession with horsepower within the 1.0L displacement class has led to both power and torque curve shapes not being so great, plus most of the entry-level engines here still resorted to SOHC 2-valve heads until recently and VVT was not so common for economy cars. It's been changing, not as fast as it could be supposed to.
