I found some info on a Facebook group that answered most of my questions, and one person commented about the splines.
Looks like:
-Axle placement is the same
-Shift linkage works
-Hydro conversion for the transmission is around $150
-Electronic VSS plugs in without issue, but I might need the 96-00
-Clutch and flywheel work from 89-91
-I need to fabricate the mount
Not even close to insurmountable. But, I might consider swapping 2 and 3 from another D series to make them a little shorter.
