The thing is that SUV's are a fad. When something's a fad people tend to exaggerate and bend the facts so that they can justify buying one.
There are safety pros and cons in driving or riding in an SUV. Like I think I already said, I've seen at least one person die from an accident in his SUV without crashing into anything, no cars or anything, not even going off the paved road. He passed me, miscalculated the turn and rolled over right in the middle of the highway. Had he been driving a sedan not only would he still be alive but he probably wouldn't have even scratched his vehicle.
