What I found interesting, reading about it this morning, was that crash tests more recently simulate more SUV and truck impacts (higher up with rigid bumpers), rather than sedan-type impacts, and these are found to be far more deadly for the occupants of other vehicles. It really is an arms race.

It actually bothers me when I see lifted trucks. I get it, they're cool if that's what you're into but... there needs to be some limits for on road use. When the bumper is at or very near head height it's not going to end well for anyone.

There are limits but just like muffler laws they are subject to selective enforcement which usually means none.

Sadly there also seems to be a negative correlation between vehicle size and driver skill and awareness.

The thing is that SUV's are a fad. When something's a fad people tend to exaggerate and bend the facts so that they can justify buying one.
There are safety pros and cons in driving or riding in an SUV. Like I think I already said, I've seen at least one person die from an accident in his SUV without crashing into anything, no cars or anything, not even going off the paved road. He passed me, miscalculated the turn and rolled over right in the middle of the highway. Had he been driving a sedan not only would he still be alive but he probably wouldn't have even scratched his vehicle.

Regardless, SUVs can also be Ecomodded and coexist on our site (I hope!). Most of the same mods even work.

Honestly it's not that I'm against owning an SUV. But it's always a good idea to weed through the misinformation and exaggerations because there will be a day when the fad goes away and many of those who had followed the fad will completely forget why they had ever joined the fad in the first place. You don't see many people taking about how great and superior station wagons and minivans were.
