Update: The night this was proposed, I coldly stated "this problem is artificial", and my wife stormed away slamming the door.
I lack tact, but I don't lack a good sense for when a plan is suboptimal. Even worse, I don't usually have a better idea at the time I'm being critical of a bad plan.
Like clockwork, the next day the optimal strategy came to me, and I proposed it to my wife. I started off saying, "you won't like this initially, but here's how this plan optimizes all considerations".
She's a huge advocate of this plan now, and is even telling everyone our grand plan, sans my initial rejection of the original bad plan, and her anger towards me.
