The backside of the filler looked new. And, if anything, a dirty filter might actually improve economy. It might chop off the top couple of percent of engine load, which tend to be less efficient.

On a related note, the air intake, runner and plenum sizes are pretty comical to me. Anyone know if a smaller volume plenum like Honda used leads to higher efficiency? I could see some possible gains from a lower volume to create vacuum in.
