A star's lifespan is determined by it's mass and how quickly it burns its fuel.
Internal pressure wants to 'explode' the star, while gravitational pressure provides fusion potential and holds the star together.
Supermassive stars burn fast and have short lives. Lose their outer shells and collapse into neutron stars.
A supernova is an irreversible event. It only goes one way. I'm not acquainted with 'nova' very well.
