Let's not forget the rear engine was still considered a valuable asset to enhance the Beetle's performance on rough terrain, no wonder it was so popular in rural areas of my country until mid-80s, and briefly relaunched locally from '93 to '96 competing against models which were around 40 to 50 years more modern.
