Probably because people feel it is less satisfying to mod a car for mpg now when gas is only ~$3 in most of the country and most cars seem to get about 25% more mpgs.
I bet if we had to recreate similar circumstances in today’s economy with the newer cars it would take almost $8/gal gasoline to feel the same mass panic again. *laughs*
My brother got hit pretty nice. Minimum wage was like 6.25, gas was 4.00/gal, and his Ford ranger he had only got 11mpg city. Ouch.
Although don’t give up hope. Here locally gasoline went up 93% from November to now in July. 1.50->2.90
