Many trailers of that vintage had rounded noses.

I’m guessing that tractor trailer combination had no problems making tight turns or jackknifing while backing in narrow streets or alleys to unload..

Note the extra space in the trailers rear wheel arch...

The extra space is for the sliding rear axle.
