Have you seen how the Schwimmer powered through the water? There was a propeller assembly that swung down over the back and basically hooked in to the crank pulley of the flat-four.
It was not a good boat, but then it was only intended for river crossings and similar small bodies of water. As a car, it was mediocre, and not particularly efficient.
